Iowa Road Trip - catching up 2022

Wow, I just realized I never posted about my Iowa road trip - the first major road trip D and I took together! I'd started working at my new job and everyone was still remote. Half my coworkers were in Iowa and one in particular had two adorable cats I just fell in love with. I mean, she was also a super cool person that I wanted to meet, and I really wanted to have some touchpoint with these people that were my coworkers but whom I'd probably never meet.

D is always up for a trip. So we packed up the truck and headed to Iowa in the Summer of 2022. I think it was the summer of 2022. Anyway, it was an awesome trip. This country is so incredibly beautiful. The landscapes change before your eyes as you drive across the states, take a few off the beaten path detours, find hole in the wall places to eat and embrace adventure.

We started off in SC, NC, Tennessee, found a slightly sketchy place to eat in Knoxville, TN, that D hesitated to stop at... but then fell in love with the food (Jackie's Dream, Food with Soul). Super nice folks and good food.

Saw the biggest cross in my life at Caryville, TN.

Amazing double rainbows in Mt. Vernon, KY. and Berea, KY.

Rainbows and sunsets in Erlanger, KY

Covington, Indiana! You know I HAD to have a photo of that!

Illinois also has corn and wind turbines! I squealed like a child when I saw the first one up close. They are majestic! We went off roading and parked in the middle of a corn field and it was dang creepy how silent it was. Bizarre feeling! See how close the corn was to the truck?

Peoria, Illinois - super cute little stop on the river to enjoy water instead of corn for a minute.

IOWA!! This was a rest stop and the corn was right up against the rest stop buildings. It was crazy! And of course, wind turbines everywhere. I was fascinated!

So we of course got in touch with my friend/coworker, Rachel, and met her kitties! Here is one - Bae I think? She was so nice to basically clear everything from her life for the weekend and hang out with us wherever we decided to go. We did dinner with the coworkers who were available - soooo cool!!

We did the farmers market, ate downtown, found another super cool place to eat called Drake's, visited West Des Moines and East Village for goodies to take back home, the Art Museum (more shopping!) and let me say this - it was FREAKIN' HOT in Des Moines. Like, over 100 hot. I was dying. I know I'm Southern, but I do air conditioning. It was insanely hot and miserable outside. It was a whirlwind trip - two days - and back on the road.

Talk about exciting - this is a wind turbine ... arm? Blade! I think that's what they are called - going down the interstate! We saw three in total, so that was AWESOME.

No clue what this creepy vehicle is that we found in Missouri, but it was weird.

Adorable houses packed in together in St. Louis, Missouri.

The arch! We drove to go tour it but it was closed. We did find a guy shooting up at the base of the archway, sitting inside a kiddie sunshade tent thing shaped like a shark. It was bizarre and disturbing. We got the heck out of there.

I realize I'm a country bumpkin and the city life isn't for me. And while I do find some of the graffiti interesting, it isn't my thing

We are getting more southern! Barbourville, KY

Cumberland Gap

Tennessee! Rolling hills and beautiful green trees. The steam coming from the downpour D navigated us through because I wouldn't have driven through that nonsense.

We had concerns about the flooding on our way home - and you could see the water was up and trees were now surrounded that shouldn't have been. But thankfully, we were good the entire trip.

How did we end our trip home? With a stop at Waffle House. It was shocking how early things closed in Des Moines and we really needed a WH. But the closest one was in Kansas City! So that wasn't happening. Keep in mind, Covid was still a player in August 2022, so that was also impacting things.

And long at last, a Carolina moon.

What a great trip, and this is what kicked off our road tripping adventures. We were in each other's space for six days with no issues. We get along so well, it's a little amazing. Love this trip and would totally do it again!

DIY Gifts

I'm cross posting this from Pressed Clovers, my "crafty" blog. It's a few DIY gift ideas that I seriously think you could still do before the holidays are here.  Enjoy!

DIY Gift Ideas

Ya'll know I started this blog as a play to show my scrapbooks for my Etsy company, Pressed Clovers.  But then I started doing other crafty things and putting pics up here, so it's turned into a crafty blog.

When I started thinking of ideas for homemade gifts, I realized I had quite a few tutorials or ideas already posted on this website! Here are a few reminders and links to things I've posted in the past.

1)  The Christmas Scrapbook.  I make my mom one for her birthday on January 4th and print dozens of photos from Christmas for her to put into it immediately.  This way she hasn't forgotten any of the details and can have it ready for the next holiday season.  Don't forget to include the double sided stickers for the photos! (more photos in the link). Basically, each page has a place for a photo and is already decorated. All she needs to do is put in the pictures and write her memories.

2)  Photo Flower Pots.  While I made these for Mother's Day, I think it would be nice for Christmas, too. There are still flowers in the winter!  This isn't difficult at all and is completely personalized.  Print pictures on plain white copy paper and mod podge them to your flower pot. Easy Peasy!

3)  Monogram is all the rage! Many of us have tons of buttons laying about - buttons in jars, buttons in drawers, or in my case, buttons from a yard sale.  Tons of buttons. A quick run to my local craft store for a burlap canvas and some hot glue can turn buttons into beautiful monograms. Loved this gift idea! So quick, can finish it in an hour.

4)  Teenagers! What about them? I wondered the same thing. Which started another one of my traditions - a scrapbook for my preteen niece.  With her, however, I buy lots of fun teenagerish stickers for to her decorate the book herself. I provided the book and basic layouts, tons of printed photos which all included her, and the double sided tape squares. She really impresses me with her creative ideas! This year, I'm giving her all the supplies pre-cut (mats for the photos and decorative strips of paper and tape, and stickers, of course) and letting her design the actual pages!

5) Toddler Artwork  This is my most favorite DIY project I've done to date.  Having my baby niece participate by "painting" four canvases and then I hand lettered the word LOVE on top. This is currently hanging in my bedroom.  Not keen on something that large? How about a small canvas or cardstock even, let them add a little paint and you add a monogram with a sticker!  Make it your own creation! :)

6) Baby on the Way.  New mothers or mothers-to-be... even grandmothers! love having these premade scrapbooks for the newborns most stellar moments.  The delivery day, the first day home, the first bath, baby sleeping - this provides a place for all those photos and will become a gift to the baby one day.  While baby boy is featured, just think pink for a girl.

I hope some of these ideas may inspire you to try a handmade gift this Christmas or into the New Year. Share your ideas with me, I'd love to hear them!

Surprise!

In my best Gomer Pyle voice, "Surprise surprise surprise!"  I know, a post before Friday!?! Cray I know. It's six something in the morning and I thought, why not?

Not that I have anything exciting to share. Nope. Work is kicking my butt. I'm trying to learn how to cook pintos. I hopefully see a doc tomorrow (the first appt I could get with the man was Nov 5 so let's see if I can get a work-in).  Life is still zooming by at alarming speeds while standing still.

Did I post pics of my cleaned up dining room? My goal is to put dishes on the table in an effort to not put other crap on the table. So far it's working. The dishes are mismatched Made in Occupied Japan. The problem is keeping Macy's fingers off of them.

I often complain of people who present their life as perfect. So as you can see here, mine isn't. This is standing in my dining room looking at the living room. Yup a mess. Oh well the dining room is pretty :)

Sunday I didn't get to see Macy at all. I asked my sister for a photo and this is what I got. Love it! Fresh from her bath, wet curly hair everywhere, exploring her world. Those big blue eyes still surprise me. Her daddy has brown, mom green. But blue eyes run in both mom and dads families.

Work is still draining my energy but it isn't as bad as it's going to get. I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving this year - down time with family and thanking God for so many blessings my family has received this year. So very many.

So there are my ramblings before seven on a Tuesday morning. :)  I need to get moving, go snuggle with Macy and get to work. I hope your weeks are going wonderfully well!  :)
